At MWC 2024, Motorola and their parent company, Lenovo, show off the rollable concept phone. It’s a phone that can be rolled around your wrist.
It is important to emphasize that this is only a concept, meaning there’s a very good chance this product will never go to mass production. It all depends on how Motorola’s development progress goes. Public interest also is a factor, perhaps letting the company know if they can continue the project or not.
Nonetheless, the rollable concept phone is an interesting premise. It’s got a soft fabric back, which is one of the reasons it can bend. Based on the pictures that we saw, you can bend the phone at any point, even turning it into its own kickstand.
Looking at this just made me think that this is the next logical progression of a foldable phone. There is no crease, and it folds at any angle. It is the foldable phone.
Would people stow their phones away by rolling them around their wrists instead of putting them in their pockets? I can imagine a few instances where they would need to quickly free their hands.
I feel there is room in the future for a rollable display. Even big monitors could find something in this. Like, positioning your monitor at an angle, and then bending it a little to adjust to your needs.
But as it stands, this is still a concept phone. We may never see this come into production or it may take several more years before Lenovo and Motorola commercialize it.
